Hi. My name is _______________________
And I’m ________________________________ Our class, Room 16, has come up with an idea that will reduce the amount of waste that makes it into our garbage cans and help our school recycle more responsibly. We are targeting stretchable plastics and plastic bags in particular. We noticed that many of these materials are ending up in our garbage cans or are being improperly placed into recycling bins without being bundled. Calgary Waste and recycling requires certain plastic products, like grocery bags, to be bundled before being put into the bins for collection. If left loose, they are so light they fly around and can jam up equipment or contaminate other recyclable materials at the recycling plant. Our idea is to supply each classroom with a plastic bag in which other bags, zip-lock type bags and other plastics can be collected. At the end of each week, we will come around and gather the bags for proper disposal. We call our program, “Bag-O-Bags”. The plastic items that can go into our Bag-O-Bags are: · Grocery bags · Shopping bags · Sandwich/lunch bags · Resealable/Ziploc bags - clean · Freezer bags · Bread bags · Dry cleaner bags · Plastic film wrap · Bubble wrap Here is how you know if something belongs in the Bag-OBags: If plastic stretches (like a grocery bag) it goes in. If it crinkles (like a cereal box liner), it's not recyclable and should go in the trash. We will be coming around with your first Bag-O-Bags on Monday, April 30th. We ask that your class give some consideration as to where you think the bag should be located in the room for convenience and effectiveness. Do you have any questions?
