Alberta Natural Regions Cereal Box Project
We are finishing the Social Studies unit on Alberta's geography. The students have learned about the six natural regions found in our province. As a final project for the unit, students chose the region they found the most interesting and are currently working through the research process to become an expert on their region. We studied the marketing techniques used on a cereal box from the bold colours to the catchy slogans and promises of amazing nutrition. The goal was to pretend that the box contains the natural area of Alberta of their choice. They needed to create a box that demonstrates their learning about that region. After choosing their regions, students had a number of sessions with the laptop computers, researching to answer a set of questions. With partners, they recorded their findings in jot notes on a graphic organizer web. For example, one of the questions was about natural resources found in their area. Students needed to list the natural resources and also find how they influence the jobs in the area. Going even further they were challenged to think about the environmental impact of the natural resource. There are some great websites created just for this unit of study. They can be found here: Black Gold engagingstudents.blackgold.ca/index.php/division-ii/soc-d2/social-4/4-1-alberta-a-sense-of-the-land/regions-of-alberta1/ Alberta: Our Community https://sites.google.com/a/esl-almadina.com/alberta-our-community/home Once finished researching, the students were to use their jot notes to write sentences from the information in each section. After editing, students wrote their sentences in good form for the back and sides of the box. Everyone is in a different spot with their projects. Some have worked on it at home and diligently in class and are finished. Others are spending time with the front art and striving to go beyond what has been asked. We will work in class until the end of the month and then the rest of the unfinished work will become homework.

We are moving full out into multiplication in Mathematics. Below is a list of the important vocabulary we will be using daily. In addition to these, we have been talking about prime, composite and square numbers. Below the word list is a warm up we did today. Discuss your child's comfort level with subtracting with regrouping. Zeros in these problems can throw some students off, and we will continue to review and solve word problems involving addition and subtraction. Oh, and I told the class I would put a website here that relates to the art we are using the old CDs for. It's the link at the bottom labelled "Snowflake". We are currently using coins to build our skills in Mathematics. Counting by 25's, 10's and 5's is not only efficient when determining the value of a pile of pocket change. It also helps to build the foundation required for multiplication and division. While many students are at least somewhat familiar with coin names and values, I've noticed that some could use additional review and practice. Piggy banks and coin jars in your home are an excellent resource for skill and confidence building!
Below is a link to a game that makes it fun to match coins and values. I'll keep my eye out for more. Good morning! I want to start the year by thanking everyone for their contributions to our wonderful celebration before the break. I very much appreciated the kindness and support of Kasia Gillings (who set up and hosted) and all of the parents who pitched in on goodies or my awesome gifts. I feel blessed to work with these children, in this school and in such a caring community. I look forward to a great 2017 for all of us!
