We will be practicing our basic facts of multiplication as part of our daily mathematics for the next couple of weeks. Confidence with basic facts is important as students move on to solving more complex equations and helps when solving problems involving division. Below is a button which links to a site with games which promote practice in multiplication, division and other areas of Grade 4 math. I am also including a link to a PDF file with a list of strategies that students can use to gain confidence with the basic facts of multiplication.

The students in Room 18 have been designing vehicles that will be built using two axles and four wheels which are being supplied. All other materials must be "found" and may include common things from around the house or school. No parts or pieces from building sets such as K'nex or Lego are allowed. The vehicles must use gravity, wind or potential energy from a ballon or elastic to move at least two full meters across the floor. Friction had been discussed and a major challenge in the design and construction will be to reduce it as much as possible. Your son or daughter may come home and ask for materials, but please do not feel obligated to head out shopping. As mentioned, the materials should be "found" and common in nature. I will supply some materials, including paper, cardboard, glue, straws and, of course, the wheels and axles.
We are currently looking at multiplication and division. Two of the specific Mathematics outcomes for Grade 4 are that students will: Demonstrate an understanding of multiplication (2- or 3-digit by 1-digit) and demonstrate an understanding of division (1-digit divisor and up to 2-digit dividend) to solve problems. The two games linked below are fun ways to practice. They begin with the basic facts and get progressively more challenging.
The students have been asked to complete a self-assessment of heir Alberta Regions Cereal Box Projects. The rubric below was created to help guide them in creating a sentence or two about how they think they did in the key areas to be commented on. Many have competed and handed in the assessment and I am putting this in the block to assist any student who still has some work to do.
